About The Head Matriarch

The Head Matriarch celebrates incredible females in the animal kingdom. All my wall-hung sculptures are female. They embody unapologetic strength and character. They may choose to be beautiful, but beauty is not a requirement for their worth.

The English language has made male pronouns the default for generic, non-gender-specific contexts. For example, most children refer to their teddy bears as ‘he’. This quiet bias runs deep through our language, our culture, and our history - I aim to challenge it. All my sculptures are, by default, ‘she’.

Currently hanging on my gallery walls are the Duchess of Cumberland (a large pig), Lady Di Ceros (the rhinoceros), Countesses Chamois and Shamois, the Pride Queen (a lioness), Madame Quagmire (an enormous hippo), Cheeky Chops (one of four pigs), Baroness Pizzly, Lady Muck, Queenie Quokka, Madam Sly Vixen, Empress Eve (Gorilla), Baroness Bearcat and the Shepherdess (a large German Shepherd).

With a degree in Biological Sciences and a background in environmental protection, I celebrate the power and individuality of these wonderful females.
